More Chinese women are playing an active role in the fields of science and technology, according to a recent report released by the Chinese Female Scientific and Technical Workers Association.

Some 36 million staff in China now work in sci-tech, of which female workers account for around 40 percent, according to the figures.

Meanwhile, many outstanding women have been engaged as academic leaders, directors and principles of enterprises.

Female members of the first National Science and Technology Representative Conference account for only one to two percent.

Nowadays, around six percent of academicians in the top science and technology organization, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, are female.

Last year, seven more female staff were elected as academicians.

Up to now, the six Chinese scientists who have won the international L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science awards, are: Zhang Miman, Li Fanghua, Ye Ruyu, Ren Yonghua, Xie Yi and Chen Hualan.

"Female scientists and technicians have to exert more effort than their male counterparts if they want to make parallel achievements with men, for they have to face fertility issues, an unequal evaluation system and even cultural bias," said one spokesperson.
